Employment Stories

Colin had recently been supported by C-Change to help him leave hospital.

One of the main things Colin had expressed an interest in was finding some kind of job. C-Change discussed this with Colin and tried to find out what type of employment he was looking for.

After extensive discussions Colin decided that he would need a little help in trying to find himself a job working in catering. C-Change suggested to Colin that we asked Enable to get involved in helping us.

We explained that Enable was another organisation who had a proven track record in the field of supported employment and that their help could be invaluable. Colin agreed that the more help the better.

Colin's priorities were to find a job and then try to work out what kind of support he would require.

After much searching with Colin we managed to source a job with a large city centre superstore in their canteen.

The support that Colin required as he started work was very quickly scaled down, as Colin found his feet in the cafeteria. His duties covered many areas in the kitchen and the seating area for the public. He was in charge of general cleanliness and clearing tables. He quickly proved himself as a very valued member of the team in the canteen, as well as enjoying his new responsibilities.

That was all over 5 years ago: Colin is still working in the canteen and is now one of the longest serving members of staff. He really enjoys his job and feels it gives his week some form of structure. Colin feels that if anyone thinks they would like to try for a job, then with the right support, there are no limits to what they could achieve.
